The coast offers a lot of areas which all offer different things. Do you want the glamour and late nights in Puerto Banus? Do you want to live in Marbella center where there is something going on all year round? Do you want golf courses on your doorstep? Enjoy views to Marrocco and Gibraltar from your terrace? Or do you prefer a calm and quiet residential area?
Here is our guide of the different areas around Marbella:
Marbella is probably one of the most famous towns on the Costa Del Sol. It has around 150 000 inhabitants and attracts hundreds of thousands tourists every year. Of course known for its long promenade, beautiful beaches and charming old town. Buying a property is Marbella center ensures you have all facilities at your doorstep. As Marbella center is well developed you won’t find many new built properties, but there are a large range of apartments with walking distance to amenities and the beach and even som villas.
Funfact about Marbella: In 1954, Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe – Langenburg opened the well known Marbella Club, aimed at famous movie stars, nobility and business executives. This transformed Marbella into an international jet set destination.
Marbella’s Golden Mile is located between Marbella and Puerto Banus and is known as one of the most expensive addresses to own a property in Spain. The Golden Mile is is also home to well known and prestigious Marbella Club Hotel and Puente Romano Resort.
Michelin-star holder Dani Garcia has of course chosen the Golden Mile as the location for his two restaurants. On Marbella’s Golden Mile you will find apartment complexes and luxury villas in between tropical green areas.
Sierra Blanca is located just north of Marbella. Because of its elevated position the views are often impeccable and Sierra Blanca is home to a lot of luxury properties from large villas to high end apartments and townhouses.
It is a safe residential area and is located just a 5 min drive from the beaches of Marbella and La Canada shopping center.
Puerto Banus is located just west of Marbella town and was built as a luxury marina and shopping complex in 1970 by property developer Jose Banus. It is internationally known as the playground for the rich and famous. In the port you will find a large range of designer stores, luxury cars and yachts.
Puerto Banus is also home to El Corte Ingles shopping center and has a large street marked during the summer months. On both sides of the port you will find wide beaches with an abundance of beach bars and restaurants. Puerto Banus mostly offers apartment complexes, although you can find some villa areas on the north side of the highway.
Nueva Andalucia is located just north of the famous Puerto Banus. Nueva Andalucia is mostly a residential area and boosts everything from apartments, townhouses and villas to large and luxurious mansions. It is also perfect for golf lovers as there are a variety of golf courses like Las Brisas Golf, Aloha Golf, Dame De Noche Golf and Los Naranjos Golf.
Nueva Andalucia also offers restaurants, bars, grocery stores and even pool clubs around the Centro Plaza and Aloha Gardens area. The bullring at the entrance of Nueva Andalucia has been converted to a concert and events hall and every Saturday you will find a large street marked here all year round.
San Pedro De Alcantara is located just east of Puerto Banus and is relatively unknown to a lot of tourists. San Pedro consists consists of whitewashed buildings with cosy stores, restaurants and cafe’s and narrow streets and has a beautiful small plaza overlooked by the church. The town and the beachside area is decided by a beautiful designed boulevards and bridge with play grounds for children and more cafes and restaurants.
San Pedro De Alcantara has a beautiful promenade along the beach with chiringuitos, beach bars and beach clubs.
Guadalmina is located just west of San Pedro De Alcantara and is divided into Guadalamina Baja and Gudalamina Alta. Guadalmina Baja is located beachside of the A7 and borders on the west to the Guadalmina River which also is the border between the municipalities Marbella and Estepona. Guadalmina Baja mostly consists of villas and mansions.
Guadalamina Golf runs from Guadalamina Alta and all the way down to the beach.The club house is located in Guadalmina Alta. Guadalmina Alta also has a small commercial center with stores, restaurants, bars and cafes.
La Quinta is located on the border of Nueva Andalcia and open countryside and is mostly known for its golf courses, resort style living and luxury. La Quinta is a luxurious residential area in Benahavis municipality. This tranquil area was built around the Westin La Quinta Golf Resort and Spa which is one of the most prestigious golf courses and hotels on the coast.
La Quinta is located just a 5-10 minutes drive from San Pedro De Alcantara and the beach. La Quinta offers a variety of recently built apartments and townhouses, often with stunning views towards the sea and Marocco, in addition to luxury villas and mansions.
Los Arqueros is located a 5 min drive up the mountain from San Pedro De Alcantara and is known for its golf course Los Arqueros Golf.
In Los Arqueros you will find an abundance of recently built apartments and townhouses, and also some villas, many of them with fantastic golf and sea views. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet and still be close to amenities and the beach.
Benahavis is one of the richest municipalities in Spain because of its high end developments, like La Zagaleta, Los Arqueros and La Quinta, surrounding the village. It is located 7km inland from Estepona and San Pedro De Alcantara and has the classic narrow Spanish streets and white buildings.
It is well known for its high class restaurants and natural surroundings.
New Golden Mile is the area from San Pedro De Alcantara to Estepona. It is becoming more and more popular amongst property buyers. Estepona town hall has chosen to avoid high rise buildings along the beach on the New Golden Mile and instead this is where you find beautiful apartments and luxurious townhouses, in addition to some urbanisations with only 3 floors. On the north side of the A7 you can find both classic Spanish urbanisations and new built complexes with luxurious finishes. The New Golden Mile offers a variety of amenities and even a zoo.
In addition there are a variety of golf courses like Atalaya Golf, El Paraiso Golf and Valle Romano Golf. The New Golden Mile is perfect for those looking for a property in the Marbella area, but don’t need to be in the hustle and bustle of Marbella or Puerto Banus.
Los Flamingos is located halfway between Marbella and Estepona, on the New Golden Mile just north of Cancelada and is famous for its luxury hotel Villa Padierna and its three golf courses Los Flamingos, Alferini and Tramores Golf.
A lot of the properties in Los Flamingos offer beautiful sea views because of its raised position, still being just a few minutes drive from the beach and an abundance of amenities.
Estepona city is located west of Marbella and has kept the charm of a Spanish village and is a very popular town for the millions of tourists and people looking to buy a property on the Costa Del Sol. Even though it has managed to keep the pueblo character, you will still find health clinics, hotels, leisure activities and shops. Estepona has a beautiful old town with narrow streets with colourful flower pots and a lovely long promenade along the wide beaches with restaurants and beach bars.
The port in Estepona is a popular place both day and night with numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs. In recent years numerous new properties have been built in Estepona town with walking distance to all amenities and the beach which has increased its popularity amongst property buyers.
Cabopino is located a 15 min drive east of Marbella. It is a perfect place to buy a holiday home for golfers as it has its own golf course, Cabopino Golf.
There is also a small marina with restaurants and bars right by the beach. The famous Andy’s beach next to the port is perfect for families because of it’s shallow waters.
Calahonda is located between Marbella and Fuengirola. Although it is very developed, green areas have been kept and apartment buildings limited. Calahonda offers an abundance of facilities from restaurants, bars, banks, commercial centers, fitness centers, medical centers and more.
It also has four golf courses, so Calahonda is the perfect place to buy a property if you are a golf lover or prefer some lazy days at the beach.
Riviera Del Sol is located just west of La Cala De Mijas. It offers a variety of amenities and because of its elevated terrain, you will find a lot of properties with stunning views towards the sea.
It is mostly inhabited by expats who love the peacefulness without being far away from amenities, golf or the beach.
La Cala De Mijas is one of the original fishing villages on the coast and is, as the name suggests, located in the munipality of Mijas. It has kept a lot of its andalusian charm, even though it has grown and been build up in the recent years.
La Cala De MIjas offers all the amenities needed and has a beautiful wide beach. It is located just a 5 min drive from Fuengirola. Just north of La Cala De Mijas you will find Calanova Golf where you can enjoy beautiful views while you play.
